How your AC works
How a central air conditioner actually works — three parts, one job.
An AC doesn't make cold — it removes heat. Refrigerant carries it from the indoor coil to the outdoor condenser, where it's released. Each component has to be sized, installed, and charged correctly or the whole loop runs poorly.
Outdoor condenser
The big box outside. Compressor, fan, and outdoor coil — releases the heat your AC pulls out of the house. Needs airflow and a level pad.
Indoor coil + air handler
Sits above the furnace (or in a dedicated air handler). Cold refrigerant absorbs heat from your home's air as the blower pushes air across it.
Refrigerant line-set
Two insulated copper lines connect indoor and outdoor. The charge has to be exact — under or over by ounces and you lose efficiency.

The pad is dead level. The line-set is routed cleanly with proper insulation. The disconnect is sized to the unit. None of this is glamorous — and most of it gets skipped by installers who are racing to the next job. We do the unglamorous work because that's what makes a system last.

The most expensive AC repair is the one in 95° August at 4pm on a Friday. Spring tune-ups catch the small problems (weak capacitor, low charge, dirty coil) before they cascade into a comfort emergency. They also keep your manufacturer warranty valid, which most homeowners don't realize requires documented yearly service.
Filter check + swap
Standard 1" filters checked, replaced if needed. We'll flag anything restrictive that's starving the blower.
Refrigerant pressures
Suction and head pressures verified, superheat and subcool checked, charge topped if low. We weigh refrigerant in — never “feel” it.
Electrical safety check
Capacitors microfarad-tested, contactor pull-in verified, amp draw measured. Most pre-failures show up here months before a breakdown.
21-point inspection
Full system walk-through with a written report: what looks good, what's drifting, and what needs attention before the August heat.
Coil + condensate cleaning
Outdoor coil cleared of debris, indoor coil dust-checked, condensate drain cleared. A clean coil is a quiet, efficient coil.
Minor adjustments
Belt tension, blower wheel, fan motor, drain pitch — anything that drifts gets dialed back in.

- It depends on size, efficiency tier, and whether ductwork or electrical needs work. Most full installs across the metro run $5,000–$11,000 for a quality Trane system. We give a real number at the in-home estimate — not a guess over the phone.
- If your AC is on the way out and the furnace isn't far behind, the math usually favors a heat pump over swapping each in turn. One system that cools in summer and heats in shoulder seasons, plus Energy Trust + IRA rebates that a standalone AC doesn't qualify for.
